Ascend Hacks To #MomLife: Tips To “Making It Work” From Our Studio Moms!

This #momcrushMay, we’re celebrating all moms and honoring the fine line between surviving and thriving in motherhood. Our Ascend moms share what helps them get the job done while still making wellness a priority.

Though rewarding and life changing, juggling all of the demands that accompany motherhood can be tough. Raising tiny humans takes an enormous amount of time and energy; and with the craziness of parenthood, wellness can often take a slight backseat. However, no matter the stage of motherhood, carving out time for self-care is important. When you feel strong and healthy, the benefits extend to others. Our studio moms share their top tips to making it work.

I’ve learned that asking for and receiving help is key. Sometimes this means stepping out of my comfort zone to accept help from family, friends and neighbors. School drop off, play dates, you name it. I’m fortunate to have support.

I’ve also realized that tapping in to the other parts of myself beyond being a caregiver is important. Finding time to care for my mind and body helps me do this. Physical activity, eating well, connecting with others, and sneaking in some alone time (even if minutes!) helps me be a more present and patient mama. It doesn’t always happen and it’s not always pretty! Sometimes it means letting the laundry pile up or not cleaning the house so I can fit these activities in. I will literally ask myself, “What are the non-urgent items that I can let slide for now?” I used to feel guilty about this. But at the end of the day, giving myself this space not only helps me feel grounded; it models healthy behaviors to my son.

And lists! I make lots of lists!

Parenting has been one life lesson after another and they keep coming!  Before I had Wrenn a friend told me it would take a “village.”  At the time, I thought nothing of it. Flash forward nine years and it’s the village that gets me through.  As a single parent, it’s all of the other moms, dads and friends that pick up where I leave off and vice versa. So grateful!

Also finding physical activities both Wrenn and I like has also been a game changer.  Being able to enjoy rock climbing, muddy kid races and Ascend Underground together has brought us closer.

I'm 9.5 months PP and I definitely haven't jumped back into working out like I expected to. I move when I can, but not what I was used to.

So, I focus on healthy eating. On Sunday morning my husband and I prep for the week, and take turns chasing the baby. Breakfasts and lunches are made and divided up for each day, healthy snacks are packaged, and dinners are even prepped. That way during the week when time is limited I always have healthy options ready to go. When I get home at night, I just turn on the oven or grill and dinner is ready to cook. When I'm starving and don't have time to make something, I can just open the fridge and grab a Tupperware of something yummy. And guilty pleasure, I always have Smucker's Uncrustables in the freezer, because I LOVE THEM!!

Bossbabe, Ascend Owner & Founder

I became a business owner when Alex (my oldest) was just 6 months old. 18 months later, my daughter, Anna Victoria, was born and at the same time I was in the process of re-branding the studio to Ascend. Life was absolutely insane and there were many days when I just hoped to make it to the end of the day. At that time, my self-care and own personal wellness was far from a priority. I ended up “paying for it” in the years to come. My body and mind fought back hard until I finally realized that I couldn’t neglect my own self care anymore.

So that quick and dirty short story is to say, my biggest mom life hack is to figure out a way to prioritize YOU on the regular. Fuel your body with nutritious food, take mental health breaks when you need it, ask for help when you need it, take the help and don’t feel guilty about it. Learn that some things can wait, and that your health is important. There will be good days and there will be bad days. Perfection is not the goal - Balance is. Lean on your fellow mom friends. Lean on these amazing moms here at Ascend - we’re here for you. We’re all in this together and it truly takes a village.
